Are You One of These People?

Each day, All over the U.S., Millions of Families Take Photographs of Their Kids

But …. Few Families Protect Their Photographs from Being Lost Forever

How to Protect Yourself and Your Family from Loosing your Precious Memories

Each day, all over the U.S., millions of American families take photographs of their families.  These images get stored on camera data cards or computer hard drives [until they crash] or they’re printed out at Target, CostCo and Sam’s Club, or a desktop printer then put on the refrigerator with a magnet or stashed in a draw or a shoebox under the bed.

For a time those precious family photographs and moments are forgotten, until the day comes that you need them.  It could be a birthday, a family celebration.  A life event like…a  Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a wedding, a birthday milestone, or simply graduating from grade school all the way up through college.  You go for a shoe box under the bed, to make a collage, to finally scrap book them or to create a slide show only to find the a mouse has gotten to the photographs, or that they faded terribly.  You scratch your head and remember that you’d sotred them on your computer hard drive that just crashed last week.  Arrgh!  You start pulling your hair out or just have that sick feeling in your stomach that you just lost 12 years of your photographs of your children.

Steps to Take So You Don’t Loose All Your Digital Family Photographs

The flip side is…You don’t even skip a beat because you outsmarted the computer’s hard drive and kept a back up copy of everything, or did you?  You know, you always read about someone on Facebook complaining that their hard drive just crashed and they lost everything and they didn’t have a backup copy.  “All their family photographs are gone!”  You just dismiss it as, “Oh I feel awful for them.”  or “That sucks.”  Until it happens to you!

But you’re smarter than that.  Because you know that, today, its easier and cheaper than ever to make a back up copy of your entire hard drive or just your photographs.  A 1GB hard drive only costs about $200 or less today.  So, really there is no excuse not to make a back up copy.  My drive of choice is a G-Tech 1tb mobile drive.  If 1tb is too much for your they also make 500gb and a 750gb mobile drive.   Sure there are less expensive drives on the market.  I’ve used most of them, but I’ve found over the years that G-Tech is rugged and reliable and what I use on the go and in my studio to back up everything.

Using Apple’s Time Machine

At least once a week, sometimes twice a week I back up my entire system.  I work exclusively on Apple computers and use Time Machine to back up my entire hard drive.  The first time you do a system wide back up it takes quite a while because you’re backing up your complete hard drive.  However, you can chose to only back up certain programs or certain files.  After the first back up, files and system back ups are incremental.  Meaning Time Machine will only back up files that been changed, added or deleted.

Photo Tip:  Back It Up!  These days, doing a system wide back up or simply backing up your precious photographs is so easy and inexpensive.  Let’s face it, your computer is a machine.  Whether your hard drive is brand new or a year old, it can fail at any given moment.  Wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry?  When you least expect it……you hard drive will FAIL!
