Commercial Photography Fashion Session

Irvine Commercial and Fashion Photography

Former Filipino fashion  model Adora [as in adorable] Grieg stopped in last week to our Irvine studio for a fashion photography session.  I really like working with her. She definitely knows how to pose and shape her body for the camera durning her comercial photography and  fashion studio session.

Orange County Children and Family Photographer

Outdoor Portraits of Two  Sisters

Went to one of my favorite outdoor locations in Orange County a few weeks ago to make some children’s portraits of two sisters.  For outdoor shoots, my children’s portrait sessions take place during the early evening when the sun is lower in the sky.   I keep this park a secret.  It’s totally off the grid and I’ve never seen another photographer there.  What I love about this park is that it is in a “bowl.”  Most Orange County parks are on flat land.  Being in a bowl, the light is filtered and softer for a least three hours in the early evening.  If it was a flat land park, which most are, I’d have to wait until 30 min. before sunset to shoot, because the light would be too harsh.  And, most parks do not have the privacy and variety of shooting locations that my secret park has.

Clothing Choices for Orange County Children’s Photography

Below are some perfect examples of colors and textures for any children’s photography session.  Great use of color and texture, that compliment skin tone, eye color and contrast perfectly with the park environment.  You can get more clothing tips here.

Perfect Place for Outdoor Children’s Portraits

Normally for children’s photography I’d have the girls take their shoes off for their portraits.  But their cute little silver shoes matched their outfits perfectly.   Another thing I love about my secret park is that it has so many different places for children’s photography.   Open, well manicured, grassy fields, long walk ways, old style rail road tie stairs and great tree stumps to sit on.

p.s.  I really like the addition of the leg warmers.  Great use of texture and a wonderful accessory when used properly.

Maternity Portraits at the Beach

Magazine Style | Laguna Beach Maternity Portraits

I met Brandon and Clair about a year ago, when I first photographed their two adorable daughters, Ava and Scarlet at the park.  As fate would have it and a bit of luck form the pregnancy gods, Brandon and Clair are blessed with a little boy, Duran.  Brandon is an artist and furniture designer.  Clair is a gemologist and jewelry designer and she had something very specific in her mind for her maternity portraits.  She wanted to have her maternity portraits done at the beach.  Specifically 1,000 Steps in Laguna Beach.  Sound romantic huh?  And it is.

The hard part was getting down the 250 stairs to the beach.  I was carrying my photo and lighting gear solo And after about 50-60 steps it got really, really heavy.  Brandon was carrying a small department store of  clothing over his shoulder.  I think in all they did about 4 clothing changes.  And Clair, well she was very, very pregnant and had to navigate the stairs carefully and slowly.

The weather could not have been more perfect, just the right temperature too.  The shoot was in mid-May, before school got out.  This maternity portrait would have been way different if we’d done it in June.  The beach would have been overrun with kids and family enjoying the ocean, soaking up the sun and the spectacular views.  As luck would have it we pretty much had the beach to ourselves for the shoot.  We were also blessed with an amazing sunset.  Can’t show you those photos though for privacy reasons.

Newborn Photography

Within the frame work of Magazine Style Children & Family photography is newborn photography.  I’ve had the privilege of photographing dozens of newborn babies over the last few years.  Each newborn session is different.  And I’m always amazed at how perfect each newborn is.  The cutest little baby parts.  Mini me’s of mommy and daddy.  One thing is consistant overall.  All babies need love from mommy and daddy, they all pee and poop right after they are fed.  After the poop or pee they are ready to fall asleep.  Mostly……k Over the past week I’ve been photographing Duran [the newest addition to their family] in the buff and Clair and Brandon together with their baby. They are a lovely family to work with.

Duran, needed a bit a of time to settle down during his afternoon session. He had a Dr.’s visit that morning and had just gotten some shots. Clair thought his inoculations had given him gas. He was clearly cranky and gassy.   It took him over and hour to settle down and fall blissfully asleep [Duran’s newborn portraits coming in the next few weeks.].  Scarlett is the youngest and she is a pistol. We were talking about a cartoon Angelina Ballerina that she was watching on daddy’s iPhone.  I’d never heard of it before.  But essentially its central characters are pink mice. So I asked Scarlett is she had a tail too.  She scrunched up her face and told me in her little gravely voice, in no uncertain terms, that she was a girl and the she had a bottom not a tail!  Her older sis Ava is very smart and occupied her self in the studio by reading an animal book that she shared with me. She knew her animals very well and knew some facts about some animals that I didn’t even know. Both their Scarlett and Ava attend private school and it really does show. They are creative and smart and mommy and daddy really spend time nurturing those qualities in them.

Professional Headshot Photography | A Girl and Her Dog

Amy and Her Best Friend | Irvine Photography Session

Orange County Headshot Photography

As a professional photographer I’m often commissioned to create on location headshots for my clients that have more of a lifestyle reportage spin to them.  Such was the case for Amy and Jaxson below.  Amy called me and needed some professional heads shots of her and her dog. But she also wanted to capture her water dog Jaxson,  a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, in all his glory.  We discussed going to the beach and Amy let me know since Jax is a water dog, he’d flip-out and want to play in the water all the time.  So we thought about a few locations and decided on a wonderful leash free park.  I had a blast with Amy and Jax.  We spent the first hour or so just focusing on Jax.  Then the next hour plus just about till sunset on Amy’s headshots.  And then Amy and Jax together.  They are very close, she raised him from a pup.

Can you believe it?  The U.S. Humane Society estimates that there is something like 78.2 million licensed dogs in the Unite States!  That’s allot of canines.  A few more stats:  Thirty-nine percent of U.S. households own at least one dog; Most of owners own three or more dogs; On average, owners have almost two dogs.  Kudos to dog owners.  I love dogs, but couldn’t imagine owning three.  Respect to the dog owners.  But then again, my sister Dr. Jill has two humongous [albiet gorgeous and constantly shedding] Maine Coons.  And for her, they are her kids.  She recently spent more the $10,000 [not a typo] on one of her cats because it was sick.  This is not uncommon for pet owner to do.  I know of may pet owners that have paid dearly for hip replacements and to fix botched back surgeries for their pups.

nova scotia duck trolling retriever pictures Jaxs’ breeder wanted to keep him as a show dog, but Amy convinced her that Jax and Amy belonged together. Love at first sight! They make a fine pair as you can see in her professional photography headshot session.  Jax is super playful and has a very expressive face. He’s also very obedient and food driven. So it was pretty easy to keep his attention with treats.

Amy needed professional head shots for upcoming seminars that she’ll be doing on trading in the stock market.  And who doesn’t love a dog?  In keeping with her lifesytle, Amy wanted to keep the look and feel casual.  She brought along a few changes of clothes and some jewelry with her.  Minimal makeup because she has beautiful skin.  Everything is shot natural light.  I love the color of her eyes.  The just pop in the late afternoon sun.

Professional Head Shots for Children Orange County

Irvine | Orange County | Children’s Head Shot Photographer

Kevin, Golden’s dad is an amazing singer. He also teaches music at TVT and is adored by his students.  Kevin and I met recently at a Bar Mitzvah that I was commissioned to photographed at the JCC.  Kevin and his band tore it up.  If you are looking for an amazing band, with sax, drummer, guitarists, lead and bass and some killer vocals.  Give me a shout out and I’ll connect you with Kevin and his posee.

It took Kevin and I a while to connect for Golden’s head shots.  I’ve just been so busy at my studio lately.  Golden is a really handsome kid with a very cool name. I mean really.  The kid has got it made.  I mean his future is…well…Golden!

The camera loves Golden and he loves the camera right back.  At 9 years old I’d say the world is his oyster.

Two Essential Ingredients to a Successful Children’s Head Shot Session

There are two things in my mind that make or break a children’s modeling head shot.  #1.  The lighting.  #2.  The posing.  For lighting I used a 4x6ft Larson softbox camera right and a white fill card camera left.  For posing I just gave Golden allot of direction.  There is no way, well typically no way that a 9 year old will know how to hold his posture and pose and articulate the slight angle of his head naturally, so that he looks his best.  Its also really important that Golden felt relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera.  I tend to talk allot and joke allot with my clients when photographing them.  This puts my subject at ease and takes his mind off being photographed.  It diffuses any tension too, of being the center of attention.  Not everyone is comfortable with being the center of attention for 20-30 minutes.  Notice the great “catch light” in Golden’s eyes.  That’s no accident.  Its a function of soft box placement and the positioning of the head relative to the softbox.  All subtle but key elements of a successful and relaxed children’s head shot, which capture’s Golden at his best and shows off the essence of his personality.  Kudos to Golden, nicely done my man!

p.s. BTW, Golden showed Justin Bieber how to style his hair. 🙂

River Winslow that is…..There are families and then their are the Winslow’s.  And then there is River, who is full of personality.  Happy, care free, a bit cooky [in a great way!} and just plain fun! River is one lucky kid.  His mom and dad are just super down to earth and very open with their fun sides.  During River’s children and family portrait session River, mommy and daddy laughed, played, made funny faces and just had a blast.  Not afraid to let their personalities shine through.  No aires or pretenses just pure fun.  What a great way to raise a kid.  For them and for me this was the perfect children and family photography session.  This IS my perfect client.  You just can’t fake this kind of emotion and close family bond.

p.s. Last month I moved my children’s and family photography studio from Old Town Tustin [was there for 3 years] to Irvine.  Just adjacent to John Wayne Airport, on the corner of Main and Red HIll.  The reason for the move was to get better AT&T reception. 🙂  AT&T reception in my Tustin studio was pittyful. 🙁  I needed to go outside the studio to use my iPhone.  Not any more though.  The new studio is much larger with a bigger shooting area and client area, and lots and lots of daylight too.

The move took place in May, 3 days after my birthday.  My sister Dr. Jill, Connie and Claire helped me pack up.  B&C Movers did the move for me.  They rock.  It’s the 3rd time of used B&C and they simply take great care with what they do.  The are efficient, clean and fast.  Couldn’t be happier with them.  If you need a great moving company call Dave at (949) 472-1131.

Before the move we started renovations in early May.  They reno’s were finished by The last week of May.   We demoed out the bathroom, ripped down a drop ceiling giving us another 4ft of head room, built on a dressing room and built in some extra storage too.  After the reno’s were finished, it took about 1 week of 14 hour days to whip the new studio into shape.  And I absolutely love it.  It’s a big, clean, comfortable and inviting. children’s and family photography studio.  Pictures coming in the next few weeks.
