Special Olympics of Southern California with the Famed Harlem Globe Trotters

A Chance to Give Back with the Gift of Photography

“Looking at the smiles and joy on these athletes faces you can tell how important this day was for them.”

Each year I partner with a new community charity. In past years of partnered with the Junior League of Orange County and Make-A-Wish of Orange County and the Inland Empire and with Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica. My goal is to work with non-profit causes that benefit children, adults and have strong tie and commitment to the communities in Southern California. This year I’m partnering with the Special Olympics of Southern California and will also continuing contributing to Make-A-Wish.

All these young basketball players had a special day to meet, clown around and play an actual game of b-ball with two true legends and heroes of basketball from the famed Harlem Globe Trotters, “Special K” Daley and Wun “The Shot” Versher. The Mayor of Anaheim Tom Tait was there too giving high fives to the athletes of Southern California Special Olympics and get schooled on how to twirl a basketball on his finger tip.

I remember when I was a kid, my father took me to see the Harlem Globe Trotters at Madison Square Garden. I sat there slack jawed at their antics and hoop tricks. This was a special day that many will remember for a long time to come. Looking at the smiles and joy on these athletes faces you can tell how important this day was for them.

A personal goal of mine is to create a main stream, highly visible, photographic media campaign for a charity foundation with the focus on children. If you know of anyone out there that is looking to do this kind of a project please steer them my way.

P.P.S. This is a great time of year to invest in yourself. Two things that I’m doing to educate myself are. (1) I’m starting an account with Audible, they are an Amazon company, one of the leading books on MP3 companies. You just start and account and download the book or books that you want to listen to on your iPod, iPhone or whatever, in your car, at the gym on the move. (2) I’ve started an membership with Kellby Training. Want to learn from some of the best photographic industry pros? Joe McNally, Jeremy Cowart, Juleianne Kost, Matt Kloskowski, Moose Peterson, John Paul Caponigro, to name a few. You can do it right form your laptop of desktop. Not sure if its supported on the iPad yet. Kellby Training, is a great place to do it. For less the $25 a month, you have 24/7 access to some of the best talent in our industry, from photo shoots to photoshop. I’m always looking to improve my skill set and for $25 bucks a month its a no brainer.

Darlington House | La Jolla Wedding Photographer

Jessica & Gabe from their Coronado Beach engagement session in San Diego.

Jess & Gabe photographed on the beach in Coronado, San Diego during their engagement session. You’ll see this photograph used later on in their fabulously fun wedding at the Darlington House in La Jolla.

Our long time friends Jessica “Jersey Girl” Casillo (former-director of marketing for Aston Martin North America) and Lt. Gabriel “High Five” Kelly, U.S.N. tied the knot in San Diego at the posh Darlington House in La Jolla. I had the honor of photographing their wedding and their wedding rehearsal. This was my first time doing wedding photography at the Darlington House in La Jolla. It was like walking back in time. The house is on the National Registry and is a gem. Having a wedding in La Jolla can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. The Darlington House is a bargain and the best part is you have lots of privacy, a suite for getting ready, balconies, an intimate courtyard for the wedding and a fairly large outer courtyard for your reception.

Julie Scrivener, did a flawless job of coordination. Julie promised me that I’d always be informed before any major event happened so we’d be ready to photograph it. She kept her promise all day long. Give Julie a call if your looking for a coordinator that will beautifully orchestrate your wedding. Thank you Julie. BTW Julie’s husband Mick is a top notch D.J. I highly recommend him. And a big thank you to all the staff at Darlington House for an amazing job.

I hired the talented, award winning, videographer, Mike “Top Knot” McCaleb of Mission Visual to shadow me for the day for a promo video. And, my buddy, Kevin “Prime Lens” Connors photographed the event with me.

George’s At The Cove | La Jolla Wedding Photography | Rehearsal

Jess aksed me to cover the rehearsal of her ceremony and invited us to lunch with her family at George’s at the Cove in La Jolla. Seriously, this has to be one of the best meals I’ve had in recent years. It was a special lunch menu and the food at George’s is spectacular!

The La Jolla Wedding 1st Glance

Darlington House | La Jolla | Wedding Photographer

Here’s Jess when sees Gabe for the first time on her wedding day. We set up a 1st Glance, so that she and Gabe could spend a few minutes alone before we start photographing family portraits. This is a fantastic, and tender way to “break the ice” and share some quiet heartfelt moments with each other. It’s also a great way to calm your nerves. We’re out of site with a long lens photographing our hearts out. My approach is to always keep it natural and fun and capture the beauty and emotion of the wedding day. Let the water works begin! It was so hard for me not to cry. Jessica was at my wedding and she was crying when i was crying. What a bunch of cry babies we are. LOL!

Jess and Gabe are slumming it in their new Rolls Royce Phantom. They left their keys for the Honda at home.

By the way, make sure to check out the cool Helicopter cookie cutters (below). Gabe, is a chopper pilot instructor with the Navy. Kick’n it old school with the Reganomics. A the top right image is Richie with her eyes closed: I had the honor of photographing her wedding with Chris a few years ago. Since then they’ve had two additions to their family. On the far right is Tiffani “Martha Stewart” Diorio. Richie and Tiff are doing the best fish eye impressions that I’ve ever seen!

P.S. Jess is Italian, and had her wedding catered Italian style. The food was a wonderful buffet spread of artichokes, sliced cured meats, mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and basil and a wonderful selection of cheeses. My kind of food!

Orange County Family Portrait Photographer

Life is too short to be a workaholic.

Take time to play with your kids and have a family portrait taken each year.

Your kids grow up so fast.

“There are no words to describe the feelings I had a few years ago when I first saw the portraits of my daughter, taken by the very talented Marc Weisberg. Simply put, tears flowed. There is something magical that happens when Marc is behind the lens. Again, no words exist, just tears.” Michelle, Newport Beach, California

P.S. Saw a great movie this weekend called Conviction. About a sister that spent most of her adult life freeing her innocent brother from jail who was convicted for a murder he didn’t commit. It’s not a family movie, but is worth watching and stars Hillary Swank, who I thought did some remarkable acting.

P.P.S. When times are tough and money is tight just take the kidos down to the beach or to the park and go for a walk or play some catch of have a picnic and feed the ducks. You’ll have fun and lots of great memories too look back on. Another fun thing to do is, make your own pizza night at home. Just get some crusts, some toppings and have a blast. You can even play top chef and rate the pizzas. We did this once just with the kids and their cousins making some appetizers. Each one had the same ingredients, 15 minutes to prepare the item and then we tasted, evaluated and scored them. Everyone was laughing so hard.

A Fairytale Wedding in San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano Wedding Photographer | Casa Romantica Wedding

What more could a bride to be ask for? Three perfect beginnings to her wedding day. A Monique Lhuillier wedding dress, Badgley Michka heels and a wedding ceremony at one of California’s most beautiful Mission churches: at the Mission Basilica, in San Juan Capistrano.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You can spend all the money in the world on a wedding. Pick the prefect dress, the prefect rings, the prefect tux, the perfect venue and the dream team to design it for you. You can even have perfect weather. I’ve seen it done a number of times where the wedding is in excess of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars but it ain’t got no soul.

Natalie & Fabio’s Fabulous San Juan Capistrano Wedding and Casa Romantica Wedding Reception

Then there are weddings that you attend and leave feeling like a changed person. Like something magical happened that evening. You are witness to special bonds and meaningful relationships that family and friends share openly. Natalie and Fabio’s San Juan Capistrano wedding and Casa Romantica wedding reception was one such day. A special time, full of riotous laughter, soft kisses, familial closeness and tears of joy, heartfelt meaningful words and laughter. Lots of laughter and song. These are the things that money can not buy. You’ll see it in the wedding photographs. It’s the capturing of emotion and natural beauty that you’ll see here. It’s stuff you just can’t fake.

The Basilica at the Mission San Juan Capistrano A 2 second wedding day portrait of Natalie against the Mission San Juan Capistrano, Basilica wall, just before her father walked her down the isle. Two of my favorite images of the day. Fabio is a total crack up. He is the Joker. Natalie is wearing a beautiful Monique Lhuillier wedding dress and Badgley Mischka heels.

Wedding pictures of bride and groom at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. I’ve visited quite a few Missions across California. I think the Mission San Juan Capistrano is the Jewel. Mission San Juan Capistrano wedding interior pictures. Fabio and his groomsmen share a close bond. His best man is whispering something in his ear. And I love the expression on Fabio’s face the first time he sees Natalie that morning, walking down the isle. Thank you for not being serious: Natalie and Fabio smiling at their family and friends. By the way, it seems that the Mission has undergone a kinder, gentler approach. I noticed a new Father delivering the service and a new church lady who’s disposition was sunny rather than stormy. The Father was smiling just as big as Fabio. You would have thought it was he who was being wed. The cutest little ring bearer and flower girl. I’ve got to hand it to Natalie and Fabio, they timed their day perfectly and left plenty of time for their family portraits, their bridal portraits and at least thirty minutes for the Bride & Groom Day of Session. Her Grandfather to the left….maybe praying that her marriage lasts as long as his 60 plus years. Fabio’s mom to the right. She gave birth to 9 children and is still as skinny as ever. Love her purple outfit and her slam’n matching heels. And oh yeah, her beautiful red hair.

The Importance of Family Portraits on Your Wedding Day

Fabio confided in me that his dad has been wearing the same suite for 30 years. I still think it is stylish. Don’t know if I could pull it off, but he sure does. And it matches perfectly with his mom’s uhhh conservative outfit. I’m showing the same family image twice for a reason. Too many wedding photographers IMO, I feel, don’t do justice to family portraits. They are often rush through them and too often, no thought is given to how to make each person look their best, and how to make the family grouping look its best. Family portraits don’t need to be stiff like deer in the headlights either. Its no accident that everyone always looks great in my family portraits. I talk and joke with them as I’m photographing, making sure that they are comfortable and at ease. I take the time to position family members so that they not only look good but also feel comfortable. I want them to look at their portrait after the wedding and think: “These are the best portraits I’ve ever had made of me.”

On their daughter and son’s wedding day, Mom, Dad and the family takes the time to look their best. As their wedding photographer I make sure that I take my time to make the best portrait of them that they’ve ever had. Family wedding portraits are important, they are a time capsule of how the family looked, and what emotions they were feeling on one of the most important days of their lives and have significant value today but will mean even more in the future than they do on the day their portraits were created. family wedding pictures at the mission san juan capistrano Mission San Juan Capistrano Wedding Photographer | Casa Romantica Wedding pictures There was no shortage of gorgeous ladies in the bridal party and no shortage of laughter and horseplay from the groomsman. bridal party pictures at the mission san juan capsitrano Another one of my favorite images is their kiss with the repeating arches taken on the inside courtyard of the Mission San Juan Capistrano.
I love the flower and sliver beading details and the way the silk gathers at her waist on Natalie’s Monique Lhuillier gown. Fabio, enjoying a quick bite. Sporting some stylish Badgley Mischka’s, a perfect match to her wedding gown.

Casa Romantica | Sweeping Vistas of the Pacific Ocean

This year I was fortunate to photograph twice at the Casa Romantica. The Casa has already won a place in my heart as a darling of a venue in San Celemente. Sweeping views of the Pacific and stunning old world Spanish architecture makes Casa Romantica a timeless and intimate wedding retreat.

Images from Casa Romantica’s patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean at sunset.

Natalie and Fabio during their first dance. in the enclosed courtyard at Casa Romantica. A guest paparazzi, who was later escorted out of the wedding for shooting with a Nikon. LOL!

Natalie’s sister (top left). Uhhh…WOW! The MC (in the middle) who played a dope electric violin.

All the speeches were personal and hilarious. Natalie and Fabio laughed and cried and so did most of their guests.

What happens at Casa Romantica stays at the Casa Romantica.

p.s. One of the best deals around town is Happy Hour at Flemings in Newport Beach, Fashion Island. Its from 5-7 PM. You need to get there early, because the bar area fills up fast. The appetizers are huge, check out their Kung Poa style Calamari, and specialty cocktails like their Mojito’s are fantastic and nothing is over $7! Their burger is done with Bleu Cheese and Bacon and drips all over your chin.
