Destination Beverly Hills Farmers Market | Portrait Photography Book Cover

I recently had the pleasure and opportunity of doing photographing famed, Swedish, best selling cookbook author Sanna Ehdin in Beverly Hills for the cover of her new cookbook. The shoot took place on a brilliantly sunny day at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market. Sanna is a free spirit who splits her time between Los Angeles and Sweden.

So, how in the world could this possibly have anything to do with wedding photography? Simple. Making people look beautiful and relaxed is what I do. And on your wedding day I’m creating gorgeous portraits of you and your families. How do I do it effortlessly? Well, there’s a little secret that I’ll share with you. As a professional wedding and portrait photographer the first step before I even lift the camera to my eye is forming a connection/relastionship with my client. I do some homework ahead of time. I always chit chat get involved in some laughter before my shoots. Laughter is like helium. It lightens up everything and warms up any situation. Another thing I do, is always show up early to my shoots to find the best light and the best background.

Photographing People is all about forming a connection. Engagement Photography is not only for those that are engaged.

First comes the connection then the light. I choose my background last. In this case I shoot at the Beverly Hills Farmer’s Market which is buffeted by some tall buildings creating a wide swath of open shade. Open shade is a photographer’s best friend. When finding the light I’m also looking for the direction of the light. Ten years ago in the beginning of my photography career this was a challenge. Now I don’t even give it a second thought. I just comes naturally.

Finding the sweet light, knowing my gear so well that i don’t need to think about it, using the right lens and the best location are all key ingredients to making a flattering portrait. Take a look at any of my portraits in the blog. A common theme emerges that unify all of them. The focus in on my client, they are relaxed and the background falls off to a nice blur (a.k.a. bokeh: from boke (暈け or ボケ) in Japanese, meaning blur).

Remember earlier I mentioned connecting with my client. Here’s the thing…that secret I was alluding to earlier. I keep connected with my client the whole time I’m shooting. The exception is when I’m in p.j. (photojournalism) mode. Because I’ve smartly chosen my light, know my gear so well that I don’t need to think about using it and have selected the most flattering lenses I can be playful and engage fully with my client and create beautiful images. There is nothing distracting me. I’m in the moment with my client and she/he/they are in the moment too fully engaged in what’s happening. Time disappears and people’s real personality comes out to play. It’s the inner beauty (not thae fake persona) that I want to capture.

We all have insecurities. In my opinion everyone is at their best when they are relaxed and happy. As a sensitive human being and a professional photographer, I can tell at a glance, if someone is apprehensive or completely relaxed. Keeping the connection going while I’m behind my lens while allows me to make sure you are at your best when I’m photographing you.

Sanna wrote me an email from Sweden:

“Marc, I just want to send a short note and say that the photos you took of me are sooo appreciated and I am very happy for them. The cover looks great and the pics have just the quality of earthiness, femininity, strength, fun and health that I want to put out there. Thanks from my heart Marc! It means a lot to me.”

P.S. One of my favorite things to do is create gorgeous portraits on location and in my studio. It’s always a new adventure getting to know some one and finding out what makes them relaxed and happy.

P.P.S. If you don’t already know it. I’m a huge foodie and wine lover. In my previous life I was a restaurant baby and worked my way up the ranks from dishwasher to executive chef in NYC. So, when I visited the Beverly Hills Farmers Market (which is open on Sundays) I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of selection. All of the produce is regional, super fresh with a smattering of boutique cheeses and even a gourmet selection of fresh dates. Yummy! A trip to the Beverly Hills Famer’s Market is totally worth your time. Next time your headed up Los Angeles on a Sunday check it out. It’s just off Wilshire and Burton Way.

Venue Info

Beverly Hills Farmer’s Market is located on the 9300 block of Civic Center Drive and is open Sunday from 9am-1pm, rain or shine.

Orange County Newborn Sessions

Jordyn is the second youngest baby I’ve ever photographed in my studio. She was only eighteen days old and completely cooperative. At least that’s how i remember her {completely cooperative}. When photographing newborns they tend to go through a cycle. Newborns arrive at the studio totally asleep or a bit cranky with their photographic agent {typically mom and dad} in tow. We get set up, I introduce my self to the baby who is often sound asleep and then mom feeds them and finally after a bit of time they fall asleep again. Yes there’s the typical, peeing or sometimes what looks like an innocent stretch really is just a ploy, a distraction, an opportunity to fill up the diaper. And hey, that’s better than going all Linda Blair. Yes it happens.

But I always tell parents that in its worth the wait till they fall asleep. That’s when you get portraits like the one below.

The studio lights are dim and the studio is extra warm

I always prep my studio for newbron portraits in a special way. I make sure that the light is dimmed down low, a vanilla candle is burning, I make sure that the heater has been cranking for a while so that the studio space is very warm for the baby. I have some extra super soft blankets to swaddle and wrap them up in. Lots of paper towels and baby wipes just in case. And I make sure that there’s some soft music on too. All my studio lighting is already dialed in so that we can place the baby and just photograph.

Something that I feel is very important is that mom is within arms reach of her little angel. For two reasons. One, in case her little one needs anything she’s literally just out of the frame. The second reason is I want to make sure that Jordyn is 100% safe. I’ll always prep mom and let her know that she’s also right there to make sure that her baby does not fall. In between changes in position I ask mom to saddle the baby in one of our or her blankets to make sure that she/he is kept warm. Babies are so sensitive, even when they are sleeping. Even though to me, it feels quite warm in the studio I’ll notice after only 2-3 minutes of shooting a naked baby she/he will shiver, that’s when I know its time to wrap them up in a blanket.

P.S. This is one of the most special times in your lives. Photographing your precious little ones is a magical moment for every new mom and dad. Ideally we like to have you bring your newborn into the studio for a session when they are a newborns. Anytime during the first week until the 4th week for the fresh curled up look.

I wish I were five years old again.

Not to do my life over.

Just to be.

Orange County Portrait Photography Session

This is a a portrait I created during an Orange County portrait session with 5 year old Sami at Cedar Grove Park in Tustin. To get this natural and thoughtful pose of Sami, I asked her to count the petals on some flowers for me.

Her mom and dad invested in a 30″ framed stretched canvas that’s hanging in their Newport Beach home. You can see more of Sami’s portrait session here.

P.S. Photographing children is a passion of mine. I get down to their level. I’ll physically make myself smaller by kneeling down or sitting on the ground with them when I first meet them. Kids feel less intimidated like this. Especially if they are shy. I also tell them funny stories about pink elephants and purple rabbits. That always make their eyes open wide and makes them giggle.

Being Prepared for your Wedding Photography

It takes two to Tango. I like to think of photography your wedding as a collaboration. And some preparation is needed. Heck, athletes do it all the time and so should you. Be prepared, then kick back and have fun! Think of any one who has accomplished anything amazing. They’ve been prepared and in peak condition to take on the task as hand. That’s why it is so important for me, as your photographer to be prepared for your wedding day and be on the same page with you. I like to pay attention to the small details so that you can forget about them and relax and have fun!

Hiring a Professional Make-Up Artist

Along with hiring a fantastic wedding coordinator, hiring a Professional Make-Up Artist should be high on your list. Even the super models do it. A professional makeup artist will enhance and bring out your natural beauty. This is also the one area where time overruns can occur. So ladies, make sure that you pad an extra half hour of time for your makeup artists. As the bride, you should be the first to have your makeup and hair done. Please don’t be last. If you are first you’ll be ready to have your portraits taken and family photos too.

As a photographer I can work allot of miracles. But, the once thing I haven’t figured out yet, is how to add more hours to the day or make up for two hour delays, or magically make the bridal bouquet that was left at the hotel appear out of thin air! Yes you heard it right. Having shot more than four hundred weddings, just when I thought I’d seen it all…something else will happen that will amaze me. But it’s important to note: A pro reacts proactively to this, from experience, an unseasoned newbie photographer most likely may not know how to handle these seemingly stressful situations. Always being prepared, is just one attribute that separates a pro from the rest of the pack.

Your Final Pre-Wedding Consultation

For each and every wedding that I photograph we have a final consultation with our brides and grooms (together). Typically 2 weeks before their wedding day. We review the events for your big day and go over, address of venues, cell numbers, timing and family photography etc. It is also important that we know about things happening out of the norm, jugglers, guys on stilts, wild animals and sword swallowers. This also re-establishes our relationship if some time has passed since we’ve seen each other. For our out of town clients we can do this by phone, iChat or Skype.

We Always Show Up Early

The reason we show up an hour ahead of time, is you never know what traffic is going to be like, I also like re-familiarize myself with the venue and find the best areas for your photography. This also give us time to take scene setting shots and just get calm and organized before your shoot.

One of my best friends Paulina an amazing photographer lives in Stockholm. We met years ago during a seminar that we both took at the start of our careers. This was an amazingly fun wedding we photographed on the sea side island of Marstrand in Sweden. Jan Eric Osterlund at the time, owned one of the largest privately owned sailing ships in the world. He named the ship Adele, after is mother. And it didn’t stay at the dock. After the wedding he and Jennifer sailed around the world for two years and then published a book about their travel adventures. My photograph of Jan Eric is on the back cover of the book. Sweet!

The wedding took place in a small red church built in the late 1700’s and the reception at a small manor built around 1780. It was a once in a life time event for Jan Eric and his new bride Jennifer whom he met while sailing in the Philippines. The wedding was an event that lasted an entire week. And guest traveled from England and France to attend.

Before the wedding day, I walked the island with Jan Eric and his adopted sons. I made some casual portrait at a stone fortress built in the 1500’s of him and his boys. Then we got dressed on the yacht and ferried over to the main land for their ceremony.
