Visiting Sonoma Cutrer Winery | Windsor California

Wine and Food Commercial Photographer

Lushicous Pinot Noir and Amazing Chardonnay

25 years ago I was introduced to Sonoma Cutrer wines and I’ve been a fan boy ever since. Sitting across from Donna Bernheim, Sonoma Cutrer’s Wine Club manager at Point Reyes Farmstead, farm to table lunch was serendipitous. We shared a love for food and wine. Donna graciously invited us to visit Sonoma Cutrer for a VIP tasting. Winner! Here’s a few images from our visit. Two of our favorite wines are 2011 Les Pierres Chardonnay and 2010 Vine Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir. Being a wine and food commercial photographer has its benefits.

Portraits of Jewish War Veterans from World War II

Black and White Portraits of Jewish War Veterans

Below is the result of a {four part blog post} pro-bono shoot I did for the 75th Jubilee of the Jewish War Veterans. The majority are black and white portraits of the Jewish World War II Veterans. A selfless group of men and women who gave everything they had for our freedom. Some of the nicest most humble human beings I’ve ever met. Each a hero. Some with the Distinguished Service Cross, the Medal of Honor, Bronze Star and many with Purple Hearts. Ask them and they’ll simply say that they did what they had too. You’d never know by looking at any of them the things that they did and needed to do for our country, for their fellow soldiers and for themselves to survive. Some were simply “lucky” to make it home in one piece. The mortality rate was something like 70%. Only 3 out of 10 men would make it back to their home and families. I met men who had know each other since high school in the 1940’s and have been best friends ever since. They had enlisted together but in different branches of the service and after the war reunited. We’re talking over 60 years! Many men an women were only 18 some 16 years old when they enlisted. I met couples who had been married for over sixty years. A true rarity in the age of starter marriages and marriages that don’t last even a year. Times were mighty different back then. Marriages, cars and products were built to last a lifetime.

Visiting Farmer Vic | Windsor CA

Feelance Travel Photographer

Brahma Bulls | Sheep | Emu’s and Ducks

{All photographs taken with the Olympus OMD EM-5 | Processed in Adobe Lightroom 4 & 5 | B & W images post in Nik Silver Efex Pro}

After visiting Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company we decided to settle down in Sonoma for the evening. Or so we thought. The Prius needed a bit of fuel so we pulled into a filling station and put $20 worth of gas into the tank. I’m a planner so I typically make hotel reservation ahead of time when I know our itinerary. But we were going freestyle for the first few days. Just figured we could call up on the fly and grab a cheap hotel room. But Noooooooooooooo! It was high season in Sonoma …. harvest time, and after literally ringing up 45 hotels while sitting in the car at the filling station only to find even an Econo Lodge in Sonoma Valley right near the 101 was $300 bucks a night {wasn’t going to do that}, this freelance travel photographer and his wife were shit out’a luck. And that was the cheapest room available in the Valley. As luck would have it, on a whim I stopped into a Best Western and a lovely young lady said that they were booked but called up one of their sister hotels in Cloverdale who had a room for $178 a night. Bingo! Beats spending the night in the car.

After a restful nights sleep we headed towards Windsor. Farm country and home of Sonoma Cutrer. One of the many delights of road tripping are the surprises that await around each curve. Meeting Farmer Vic on his farm and being brought down to my knees by his vice like hand shake was painful, but worth the visually delightful surprises on his farm. Vic, 85 years old raises Brahman Bulls, Emu’s, Sheep and Ducks on his farm. {below} An Emu Farmer Vic name Arnold Schwarzzeneger and his mate Maria Shriver was running around the farm liberated after her separation from Ahhnuld.

Victorian Architecture Photographer

Eureka | Benchmark for American Victorian Archtirecture

{All photographs taken with the Olympus OMD EM-5 | Processed in Adobe Lightroom 4 & 5}

Eureka’s name is synonymous with the Gold Rush, timber barons, the fishing industry and a historical port town. We almost blew past this little gem of a town. Driving through the back streets close to sunset, I was struck by the plethora of charming Victorian houses. Many in pristine condition. The California Victorian architecture era started in San Francisco and migrated north to this area in the late 1800’s. The image below was a lucky stumble upon. Period autos, Victorian homes and a blue sky as the back drop. The photograph could have been created 20-30 years ago. I enjoy finding just the right angles to make these historic gems stand. It was fun being a Victorian architecture photographer while in Eureka.

World Class Cheese Producers

Crowning a hillside on Point Reyes overlooking the Tomales Bay is the award winning Point Reyes Farmstead | Cheese Company. This was the start of our road trip up the California Coast to Oregon. Couldn’t think of a better way to start then to land at SFO, rent a Prius in the city and motor out to Point Reyes and embark on a food and wine photography adventure. Never having been there before I was concerned wether we’d make it on time. As luck would have it we arrived just in time for a VIP tour of the facilities with our gracious hosts and oweners, Bob pictured below and his daughter Jill. Click on the link to see the start of this travel photography journey.

I was intrigued to taste their cheeses. California is known for producing some of the finest wines in the world, but cheeses? Let me shout it out from the hilltops of Point Reyes. Bob and his family makes amazing cows milk cheeses! They are on par with cheeses I’ve had in Paris on my many visits. World class and award winning: Mozzarella {only served and sold at the farm due to it fragile nature it can’t be shipped}, two types of Blue cheese Original Blue and Bay Blue and there delicious aged Toma {plus we got to sample some Aged Toma too!}.

Bob’s farm has nearly 1,000 head of cattle that are milked 365 days per year. They keep meticulous records on all their Jersey cows to measure health and productivity.

My visit to the Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company combine two of my passions: Food & Wine and editorial photography. As an added bonus, the wine gods smiled upon me. Across from me sat Donna who is in charge of the wine club at Sonoma Cutrer Winery. Donna arranged for a VIP tasting at their Windsor, CA winery for us the next day. I’ve been a fan of their wines for over 20 years. After our tasting we headed up the coast stopping along the way at Tomales Bay for Oysters and some beer.
